I don't understand any of the new games coming out anymore. I had a yearning for the games of yesteryear, and came across this little gem at a local store. The joystick is preloaded with a decent selection of 10 Atari games:
Breakout, Gravitar, Centipede, Adventure, Asteroids, Missile Command, Yars Revenge, Pong, Circus Atari, and Realsports Volleyball.
The joystick is hardwired to an approx. 6ft. long video/audio output cable that plugs directly into a tv's ports. Everything is activated using the joystick. Lacking a console, all the required buttons are on the joystick itself. There's an on/off switch (thankfully with a red indicator light), and buttons for firing, select, start, and reset.
The joystick itself is well constructed, and is a close approximation to the look and feel of the original. I know I can abuse it for hours with little concern that it will break while I circumvent mazes, blast alien invaders, and save the universe. The firing button and other buttons respond very well. The unit requires 4AA batteries. The joystick may be a little heavier than the usual, due to the fact that it has more hardware and batteries inside, but this is not really noticeable.
The graphics for the games are faithful to the originals, or seemingly enough to my memory. It's reassuring to know that the joystick is licensed by Atari, Inc., and it looks like they went out of their way to create a pleasant experience. When the joystick boots up, there's an internal menu system that utilizes old style graphics and lettering reminiscent of the era. Nice touch.
My only concern with the unit is that the unit relies solely on batteries, with no optional power supply port. While the joystick is light on power usage, what if you are one of those people that will spend many hours (or days?) playing, determined to conquer some hitherto unbeatable level, or beat your old record score? For most of us though, 4AA is fine.
This is definitely a good buy for a retro gamer, someone who wants to reminisce, or similar. I doubt any youths playing the more modern games will give this a second look, or play it for longer than 5 minutes. This is definitely a niche product now. I am pleased with the purchase, and also like that I didn't have to search online for the old console, cords and cartridges separately. It's all self-contained and ready to go. Enjoy!
